NITK SURATHKAL, KREC, NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY KARNATAKA: From the eyes of a student (batch-2010)....

*Yeah all the keywords are impregnated for SEO.
NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY- NITK (KREC) SURATHKAL, MANGALORE KARNATAKA is one of the top 3 NITs in India, though not flaring in top 25 colleges in India Today-2007. I would go on even to say that I doubt authenticity of the ratings they so proudly provide. Latest news: In top 10-11 in all the surveys.
Some time back it did seem like there was no hope for many colleges, IIT Guwahati and IT BHU, VIT Vellore to name a few. But they all have jumped several places and climbed up to make it to the privileged few; don’t know what makes such a huge impact within a year. Some money transfers might have helped a lot.
I am not a big fan of my college, nor am I here to show my passion or patriotism for the same. I would just like to give some inputs which I think could help you to make a decision.
The college has an advantage with respect to the location and reputation that it has acquired over the years. For ex Location is something which works as a disadvantage for IIT Guwahati. NITK finds itself in the commuting range of Hyderabad, Bangalore and Mumbai. To boot Mangalore which is among the upcoming Tier II cities is also taking a leap.

Mangalore is a coastal city which definitely has its moments, and is somewhat fun to roam about (unlike many other cities in Karnataka). A private NITK beach made a big impression at the start but the feeling soon withers thanks to the easy accessibility, black muddy water and dark sand. The campus is nicely built with good hostel facilities but food sucks BIGTIME. A mega hostel is under construction for the soon to be implemented OBC quota*.
*the construction is now complete, and we the final years are expected to inaugurate the same in this odd sem session of 2009. 7 storey, with a view of the beach from the floor i am going to occupy, can it get better than that. Yes it can, Yes it can. Our gang, THE AVIATORS has full floor to ourselves!
Coming to the studies, I would say the college is average+ but so are the bottom three which round up the top 10 (non IITs). You don’t have much choice in India, you can either crack JEE or round up like many others. Looking back I think, I made a mistake to not to get into some 4yr or a chance with dual degree in IIT @ 3000 AIR. If you are not much into engineering but have shown interest because of the hype and reputation that comes along, you may think about not making the same mistake. Something most people realize only after making the cut, we all lack a good enough idea of what we are really up to, what we really want as freshmen(women :P)? If you have fat placement packages in mind , then you may not have much enthusiasm for engineering as such. If you are looking for some bachelors’ degree and management or civil services is your dream, then the branch makes a little impact and it’s the college that holds the key. But if you have some family tradition or it feels like there is some engineer inside longing to come out, then branch and of course college are paramount. I thought I was the later one and ended up choosing Electronics and Communication @ NITK. That is the biggest challenge, to decipher who you really are, what you really want and the whys!!!
The college is average at basic infrastructure (engineering stuff) that has nothing to do with funding, it is the faculty, and people employed which saddens more than often. The faculty is scarcely capable (shortage + at least 50% lack the means to be good at teaching, BUT PL NOTE: CHEMICAL, CIVIL BEAT THE REST IN THIS REGARD) and non teaching staffs are highly incompetent, yet it doesn't get much eyeballs in India and is taken as more or less a norm and of course you have got to pay some price for not cracking JEE. Practically every non-IIT is like that, anyway the education imparted is already obsolete, so it matters even to a lesser extent. Although The obsolete education is not one trend that is solely associated with non-IITs, the IITs have not surged far ahead either. What your potential employer wants to check is whether you have it in you to learn and implement quickly, the aptitude. The cultural difference between north-south and "sometimes" bias also add up to misery.
All in all you should lower your expectation was something which we were lectured on our orientation to ECE department, which is arguably best what we have got in India. Yes that is right. (None of the IITs offer this branch). What you can really expect is good placement. For people interested in going abroad for future studies especially MS or Mtech to specialize more in their respective fields or whatever (not deviating from field of engineering) are expected to work harder unlike the reputation and easy meat that one gets in IITs. ECE at NITK is good in this regard, the faculty has good rapport abroad.
So the bottom line is placements are good in NITK (GOD FORBID, the same sources who come up with so horribly misguiding rankings every year ranked NITK among top 3 in India (incl IITs) in terms of placements), though you can’t over rely on them either, it is something that fluctuates with demand and supply. Any branch which is in heavy demand also attracts equally heavy supply. Also the trends are never constant and vary over a period with booms and busts being the norm, they continue to evolve and change. So placements too provide an incomplete picture. All I am saying is you just can’t say hey chemical attracted a package of 10 lpa previous year, think I should go for it. Think rationally, about the whys, my other post might help.

*latest news regarding placements: as on June 08, 2009. Placements have touched a new low, and >100% (Yes people used to get more than one placement opportunity thus pushing the number to above 100) are things of the past. Top 10 students were finding it hard to get placed, just a healthy CGPA is not enough by any means. Again recessions are not going to last for ever and for you, with another 3 years to go to placements, they might be on a new high by then. The best branches in terms of placements were clocking in the range of 85-90% in terms of people placed.

VARIOUS BRANCHES AT NITK-
disclaimer- The point of view given below are my personal and may vary from observer to observer. The data/views has come from fellow students and notices as posted in coll. I've not considered off campus and exceptional stand alone placements.
ECE- ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION- the most demanding branch, in terms of curriculum, faculty, Competence among students. It provides very good placement opportunities along with high scope for future. With the continuously evolving trends it is believed to be one of the ever green branches. The faculty at NITK, barring very few professors is very incompetent and still NITK, ECE is a very good department with national and international repute. Profs with PhDs are scarce though improving numbers don't tell the real stories of the incompetence underneath. The lectures are hardly lucid, labs flare better and much more fun. Overall an option to go for if you are really into engineering as it seems people with interest always make their way despite hindrances. Please don’t mistake into thinking that these lecturers to be incompetent in evaluation and less demanding from students, it seems these dudes have really high opinion of themselves. The grading system sucks, wrt pointers are not on scale as in many other branches.
Placement- 4.4 lpa being the average (if the first words on reading were- hey that is quite low!!! please update yourself with reality, money is nowhere raining in engineering, yes even in IITs. People never shy away from cooking figures to make themselves look good.). Not long ago it was rated among the top 3 in India (incl IITs) wrt placement. Range: 3- 9 lpa
Verdict- go for it if you have some genuine interest and your AIR is >2700 in JEE. An Other and somewhat better alternate being ECE at NIT Trichy, Warrangal. But i admit for a north Indian surathkal provides a better culture and environment.
If you are just looking for placement hold on please, it is not a fun place to be in, Comps and IT are just right for you.
CSE: COMPUTER SCIENCES- a good department in all, good placements and cool lecturers... though my friends have reported about some some scary ones too. All the good companies are on campus. Random grading (your answer sheets won't matter a single bit) system is in place in some courses, High pointers (CGPA) is a norm. Not even close to highly demanding, so it has very good returns and is quite a bargain.
Placement- 4.7 lpa being the avg. Highest in the coll. Range: 3-10 lpa
Verdict- Go for it unless you are not much into computers and hate coding/ programming. Very cool branch, you can utilize your 3 month breaks in between semesters and cram up some languages and you will be done for the next sem.

IT: INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY- all the benefits of COMPS minus (somewhat non recognized branch (please check details, I've not updated my database) and too much dependency on industry, prone to booms and busts). It is tailor made for industry requirements and has only lately come up in NITs, still not offered in IITs. Random grading + vacant lecturer posts, believe me you ll have to attend only half of the classes, but it gives rich dividends in terms of placements and Anyway who cares for regular classes.
Placement - nearly the same as in Comps, the highest package being a tad lower.
Verdict - Go for it, provides some easy meat. Though there are some risks involved. Kindly go through status-quo regarding acceptance nowadays.
Latest news,2009: The IT department which was once hosted in a single room (Story of 2006) has moved into one full fledged Building along with EEE. Way to go IT!

MECH -MECHANICAL - highest intake minus beautiful creatures (at least supposed to be) called girls. A really annoying teaching staff, as reported by students. Profs follow their own rules - Random grading, never ever question the prof (they are always right), you are always in for a surprise. Attendance holds the key. Marks, talent hardly matter + there is no vindication in case you call for one when u find yourself in trap. NBA (some AICTE body which evaluates departments) refused to give accreditation thanks to poor infrastructure and poorly executed cover up.
Placement- 3.7 avg. Range - 2.5 - 6.5
Verdict - avoid, if you are looking for mech go for TRICHY OR WARRANGAL.

ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS - the most uncool branch in coll, i say so only because of the trend in our batch and one that followed: all Muggus from all over India find a place in this mother of crammers. You will find all variants from different corners of the country. I got to admit I've rather poor idea of what they are up to, their department and everything. But what is EEE all about? All heavy electronics you see around (except semiconductors and other minor scale electronics) comes under the purview of EEE. So it is a branch with huge scope and is a hit in IITs after Comps.
Placement - 3.8 "i think" is avg.
Verdict - i just don't know, but i won't like to be in their branch at any cost, thanks to their always studying culture. My say would be you should opt for Trichy, Warrangal if you are getting one. There is absolutely no problem with the branch and it is IIT's pride.

CHEMICAL- one of the better departments here. Good placements + good GRE (for higher studies off to best schools in US) track record. Good teaching staff as i've heard.
Placement - highest can go up to anything in upscale of 7 lpa. Avg must be around 3.5, "not sure"
Verdict - go for it.

CIVIL- a replica of chemical in many ways minus the higher study factor.
Placement and Verdict are tad lower in terms of stars but with civil booming like never before, it is a good bet.
METALLURGY AND MINING - well Meta is better than Mining. apart from that I've little to add.

please note: I am not the right person for asking the branch, College you can expect at said rank, some of these posts are just a guide towards how to go about choosing college and branch, a guide nothing more.

for any other queries pl feel free to ask... post as comments or email aviator003@gmail.com, gurlivleen@in.com...

  2. i am a student from pune city. i got good marks in aieee-2009. i wish to take electronics & communication in NIT SURTHKAL or NIT NAGPUR. I can easily get any branch at NIT NAGPUR . but chances of getting electronics & comm. at NIT SURTHKAL is very less. i can easily get mechanical/chemical at NIT SURTHKAL . please,please,please.... tell me immediately which is a better choice for me ? how is the mechanical department of NIT-SURTHKAL? is nit surthkal is better option for me(means is it better choice than nagpur?)?
    PLEASE ,GIVE ME REPLY IMMEDIATELY...................

  3. Dear sanket,

i am copying the reply from mail to blog, so that it ans common questions....

if u really like electronics plz take it in nagpur, if you are ok with mechanical i would say come to surathkal, though i wud suggest to go with chemical if u have no issues with that (i wud prefer chemical over mech at surathkal)
chemical is one of the better branches at surathkal, so is ece and comps...

Mech dept is very k at surathkal...not great by any means of imagination...
    surathkal better than nagpur...certainly...why?
u wud get much better exposure, i personally feel every north indian shud spend some time in south to learn some of the better things that we wud miss in north india...+ infrastructure, opportunities and rankings are better and these translate into better brand...

Plus in case u study hard and get good pointers, a good chance in chemical, you can go for ece and comps in 2nd year, post sliding that is...

Overall i wud say agar ece say kuch pyar nai hai to come to surathkal (I hate this place, but i know it is better than nagpur for that matter jalhandar, that is why i came here).

so here is the thing...brand is important (of the college) so is branch, but without any exposure u can't really decide whether u wud like ece or mech.... I Literally hate ece here...and it was my first preference when i applied for nits...

P.S: GO FOR SURATHKAL UNLESS U R IN LOVE WITH ECE( WHICH U CANT JUSTIFY WITHOUT ANY EXPOSURE TO ECE). IF U R GETTING ECE, ELECTRICAL, MECH AT TRICHI, WARRANGAL...go for them above surathkal (though i doubt that)

let me know if any of ur friends or u have any other queries regarding iit or nit admissions...wud love to make life easy for u guys...best of luck...

    Hi! Gurlivleen .........
Thank u for giving me the information abt nits.
Actually I was bit confuse between nit surathkal & nagpur. But there r so many doubts I have about engineering colleges. I got rank in extended merit list in IITJEE-2009. but there r no chances of getting iit . Currently I am living in city PUNE(called as education city of MAHARASHTRA)such a great city(except traffic) . There r so many good engineering colleges in pune (some of them r very close to my house) . I can get admission there . Do you think that surathkal is best place for engineering? What about the placement there? How r the other activities there ?(sports ,badmin.,gym) Is infrastructure is really great ? What about hostels and mess? What about food ? r they serve fish?
The very imp thing , is there any language problem in surathkal ? I am very much comfortable to marathi & english also hindi.... but not that kannada.. Which language is used by faculties there...I hope it may not be kannada ....
Nagpur is also very much comfortable for me , as it comes in maharashtra & also so many relatives... but I wiil choose surathkal....
Also what about the faculties? r they really helpful? Is there gpa system like IITs? What r the timings for lectures & practicals for 1st year? Are there any chances of ragging(if yes then what type ? I mean common intoduction or exploitation?
I am asking u so many questions ; because i think only surathkal student can give ans to these.please , give me ur reply. Your reply is awaited.......

    ReplyDelete
  5. MAN....SCORES OF QUESTIONS...Even though i am not big on ragging... i ll take special interest in u...:P
starting with that: well u ll be ragged only if u want to...then why wud ny1 want to, will be the next ques, its not something one enjoys rite? but there r benefits in terms of club activities which will elude u otherwise....so no ragging issues... very strict restrictions....

for grad, i think a person should prefer a good coll as away from as possible, that does not mean siberia but away from family influence... explore, these are the years u wud learn a quite a big deal... dont limit urself to known terriotary...if u r native of pune... take out pune from the question atleast....then nagpur...

+ surathkal is much better than all mahrashtra colls... i bet on that...it is certainly not the best for engi, but u din knock down iit either...so u ve to live wid that...

infra and facilities, well at par with all other non iit colleges...

placements, think trichi wud be a better place, but only slight edge... all colls are bleeding in the time of recession even iits.. about placements, three years down the line, your guess is as good as mine or for that matter anyone's...one thing for sure if u r in top 15% of ur class in any decent coll, u ll have enough opportunities to make up for the loss in terms of brand... atleast before this recession surathkal was in top 10 in terms of placments...must be there still now...only the averages have come down...

n yes no language probs as such.... of course knowing marathi is certainly helful in mahrashtra, the same way with kannada... but little hinderance in coll activities....

faculty... it depends on ur branch for comments read thru my posts in the blog....www.sunriseondarkhorizons.blogspot.com
u ll get a feel about surathkal and the engineering fundas....
if u r in top 15%, faculty has no reason to hate u, n in mech pl dont be aggressive with lecturer: only caution...

yes cgpa system is in place for all nits...and the timings are not unlike any other college...usual 8 to 5, with breaks and free periods... for 1st year 5-6 theory courses so around 20-24 hours + 2 labs (6 hours/week).
classes only on weekdays...75% attendace, the regulations have become stringent over the last couple of years...for us the weekend starts from thu nite...:P

Hope that ans all...man this is a big mail...let me know if u decide to come to surathkal...

  7. hello there,

i have got a very good aieee rank of 1281 AIR and WB state rank of 37.My friend (AIR 10165) and me want to go together to a college (preferably NIT Surathkal). Wat options are open to us?

n which 1 shud we go for?

We are bengalis and dont know hindi at all. Will there be language probs?

u seem a very knowledgeable person.Kindly help out...

    ReplyDelete
  8. dear kumar,
4311, little chance u wud any 4 year courses + even the 5 yr ones will be in BHU or ISM...i wud prefer the top 3 nits over these two...Now the new IITs, they ve no track record to brag about...i personally feel at least for 5 years the top 3 nits wud hold an edge over them...it takes some time to gain acceptance and by that time u will be out in the open ie u wud have finished ur engineering... so these new IITs wud not impact u a great deal, don't think there tags wud land u up with great jobs, and as u said u r interested in mba and not a MS or Phd in engineering studies(the famous iit tag has little value)

It all comes down to this.... do u want an iit tag, which helps if u make a combo iit+iim!!! But u want a comps science as well, u seem to have real enthu n clear cut idea about it...ur air in aieee suggests u won't get comps in trichi either, may be warrangal, surely surathkal (state quota)...i wud prefer them in that order, with surathkal given the last priority...although there is only one front runner, trichy the other which round off top 4 are pretty close... so u can go for a coll close to home... surathkal....+ good chance u ll hv some class mates of yours in your coll batch...

if u r really sure about mba and u r driven by a business attitude(u love business or seem to ve some acumen for it) go for new iits...((mostly we actually don't know that by this age)))... but if u r just another kid on the block like me 3 years ago, who read it somewhere or was preached that mba+b.tech lands u with the best jobs... plz go for a nit with comps...keep ur options open and explore...

in the long run it wud make little diff but will help u discover what u really love comps or business???

but what if u r getting comps or some interesting branch in these new iits(frankly i don't know whether u will?). I Wud still prefer top 3 Nits...they wud help u explore comps at least on par with these new IITs if not better....

BOTTOM LINE: Choice for u is not very tricky...

1st pref: by any stroke of luck any 4 year iit degree...the old ones
    2nd pref: NIT Trichy, comps
1st pref NIT Surathkal comps, (100% chance of securing a seat)

    AVOID: New IITs, BHU, ISM....

I've tried to answer all possibilities, pl get back in case u ve still some concern...

    Best of luck

    ReplyDelete
  9. P.S: 1st pref wud be rather....

1st pref: by any stroke of luck any 4/5 year iit degree...the old ones
    ((5: if u r a fresher from high school))

  10. well Please get out of WB...u don't know hindi...no prob... many don't know it.. but no better time to gain some exposure...

pl don't limit urself... u ll pay a really heavy price if u do... explore to the fullest in ur coll years....

but u don't want to land up in someplace where u understand nothing, even though for an initial phase... for surathkal or any southern NIT (Warrangal, trichy, calicut) there won't be any probs with hindi.... hindi is the 2nd language after english and 3rd is kannada (and that is because 50% of the populace is from karnataka)...

u also want urself and ur friend to be in same coll... then trichy is definitely out of ques... at his rank he won't get a seat in trichy... u wud get any seat in top 3 NITs or DCE...most of top 1000 go for iits(the no. may wary though...)
to keep u friends together opting for warrangal will be a close call to make..(ur counselling will be way ahead of his) and i can safely say warrangal is out of question as well...

surathkal: well if he is ready for some bottom rug branch... meta mining... but i wud suggest him to go for some better branch in calicut or even west bengal if he gets one....
for the sake of being together u should not jeopardize ur career...even after u opting for surathkal(i wud suggest u to go for trichy as first preference), u still have a very good chance of not being together... there will be a lot of fight for top 3 nits especially after favorable rankings in some top magazines...

BOTTOMLINE: 1) U both will lose a lot in case u decide to stay together...u will have to compromise on college and he will have to do the same for a branch...makes no sense to me...

and for heavens sake pl don't opt for WB... worst choice ever..i hope u ve heard the story of frog in a pond...u ppl will stay together but will jeopardize big time on career...

    2) Pl don't be afraid to explore, learn/unlearn... make new friends....ur question itself suggests that ur friendship can last more than a semester apart...there wud never be a good time to part...even after coll u wud like to have the same company or whatever....

    3) surathkal has a nice mix of north and south... i wud prefer it over the other 2 warrangal and trichy for that...no language probs n u can learn hindi atleast the basic with in a month, that is if u r willing to or open to this idea... i think this is high time for u to get out of the cocoon uve created for yourself...

    4) u wud not lose a great deal by goin for surathkal, i wud anyway prefer it over trichy even though i have heard that it has slightly better infrastructure and faculty...especially for a non-south indian the choice of surathkal makes sense...But ur friend will potentially jeopradize his career for this move...he can get a much better brach say in calicut or nit WB, I firmly believe he should prefer that... coz he will land up with a really low rung branch otherwise....

hope that helps...as always get back if i ve mistakenly left anything or u ve something else u wud like to share....

  11. and really sorry for the delay guys, was away... i understand the anxiety having gone thru it myself...

ll be more than happy in case any of the above helps u make a more educated decision...

good luck...only one thing explore ur life to fullest... this is the optimum time for that...don't limit urself in any manner...

and remember i m speaking not just from my experience but from the experience of many of my friends...the things u feel r most important to u rite this moment may seem irrelevant some 2 years down the line... u wud learn/unlearn a hell lot more in next 2 years than u did in ur entire life till now ... pl be open to the challenge...this is the platform for the rest of ur life... be open to all possibilities....

  12. Thanks for ur prompt reply...

From ur advice,we feel more inclined to join Nit Surathkal, also because it is in the top 10 engi colleges.

My friend and i will have to go together as we will be going out of home for the first time(if we do), and our parents want us to stay together. He is willing to settle for chemical (as it is good) and besides last year guy with 32000 rank got in.So i dont think ne problem...

I want to go for electronics as surathkal has the best faculty in electronics in India according to India Today. I want to really study hard and then go for MS. Are there too many distractions there?

thanks a lot for ur advice...

    ReplyDelete
  13. I didn't know about the 32000 rank story... if that is the case + he can get chem in surathkal, that is brilliant... chem at surathkal is one among the better branches... the facutly is good n they ve a good record of ms and phds...

if u want to study n ms is ur plan... ece is a good branch to be in... k but very demanding faculty...most competitive branch among all... as a fellow electronics guy, i don't think if u want to study, there is a lot to distract u...in fact the competitiveness pushes u for more....for ms, the surathkal tag is not big... so the onus lies on u to make it big urself...extracurricular activities, participation in fests, awards, summer/winter projects, research all this ve to go along with the regular curricula...

and honestly i don know what u need more in order to convince u to get out of the nice little cocoon u ve built around urself...

parents don't help in this regard, n believe me this is no uganda or Zimbabwe so the "if we do" decide attitude has to change...u can live life on ur terms but the envo is never in ur hands...n by fostering the near home attitude, parents ill-prepare for the real world outside...

my words may sound harsh, n i don't keep a tight leash while writing... but i wud rather be as honest and straight as possible... this is ur career we are talking here... the ramifications of the moves u now make will go a long way in deciding your life.... u will get chances later but it is always better if u start on the right foot...

  14. Hi Sir,
My parents are insisting me to take computers at IIT punjab.I may get a seat there because of OBC quota.I would like to know if i prefer engineering as my career if new iits will be better or NITs.many students leave their NITs seats to get into IITs.Do u think there r doing wrong. These new IITs will be mentored by old IITs wont it be good.I talked to dean of IIT-D they r telling that placement will be taken care by IIT-D.Can u give me a more detailed account of placements in NIT-Suratkal this year in terms of pay packages,no. of students placed?
    - Show quoted text -

    ReplyDelete
  15. First things first: the placements r good in surathkal.. on par with the top 10 colls...if u compare comps IITD and here... u ll have 30% give n take in terms of difference among average package...But current data will have little relevance in predicting the trend that u ll have when u sit for placments...the smart money is on that all the recession loom will be history by the time u sit for yours.... so chill....before recession it had a very good placement record despite having total psychopaths at helm of training and placment department...among top 10 nationwise...

New iits still have the backing, that will put them in top 20 by brand and repu in 5 years...so its all a chance u can take... i don't think will make a huge difference...these colleges r at least that good, that in case u r in top 15% of your class, you wud get opportunities which will land u up in the place u deserve sooner than later...so in long run little difference...

Google about new iits, their current students, infrastructure, faculty, future plans and make an educated decision based on that rather than your parents insisting (read forcing) you to join...its your future, they won't ve to live it...

Bottom line: with your inclination, you can go for iit punjab, won't make a huge difference... definitely a chance... it can pay off great in case u decide to go for MS phd, the iit brand helps...or even in worst case scenario you will be only slightly under par in terms of opportunities (If that happens)... go with your gut and what u decide rather than your parents'...

  16. Hi Sir,
thanks for ur help.can u give me some details that on an average how many clear CAT yearly from Surathkal campus? Are there coaching facilities available for CAT n UPSC exams.

    ReplyDelete
  17. @ aswani

6-7 calls per batch at least... then some 5-7 pass outs get final calls... so every year 12-14...not much UPSC though...for cat there is TIME inside the campus, not many attend classes though...For cat, u need only good test series and the center for that is avbl inside campus...
for UPSC no coaching i think, though there r some ppl from Bihar who r prep on their own...

u ve a lot in ur head right now, for the time being just check on the current status of New IITs, rest will be taken care off by itself..take a call on admission according to that...these coaching facilities are avbl everywhere....ok? ...KISS(keep it simple, stupid....)

  18. hi sir,
i am a guy from karnataka, am definitely sure of goin to nitk surathkal. My state rank is 206, thru which i will get mech, eee, and comp sci(maybe). comp is my first priority, but if i hav 2 choose, which shud it b eee or mec????thanx for your time...

    ReplyDelete
  19. hello there, nice blog.:Di got a rank ov 2429 in aieee..state rank bein 41(kerala btw)...i saw some of the openin n closin ranks n i thot since there was a less chance of gettin ece...i did go for eee...:Dbut seemz lyk itz abad choice frm ur blog??...hmm wut abt
    NIT trichy?howz eee there?any idea?
and any idea abt NIT calicut?da one in my own state...i do think i will get ece there.:Dwhich shuld i prefer?and any idea abt BITS,pilani?got 330 there..myt get some gud dual courses.

  20. @ullas:
    at 206 i don't think u stand a chance for comps...mech,eee fill
    together...

so for comps... u ll ve to score high in 1st yr, all the 1st yrs
irrespective of their branches are combined and div into 8-9 batches, so that every1 has a fair chance for sliding into their preferred
    branch....

my take wud be mech... but my interest may ve no correlation wid urs....so for u...what u wud prefer? heavy elec or mech the basis of very engineering...eee wud cover the core electronics...heavy electronic machinary...and mech wud be bit broader in domain and u can venture into specialized aeronautics n others later....
n plz go thru the other posts, ll help u to discover ur hidden intentions about engineering....engineer inside or just another chap like me following some1 else' dream....

depending on the above criterion go for the branch that fascinates u the most at present(google about the scopes and current areas, the fields and stuff to gain more insights) or in case of the later choice (no engineer inside), go for mech....

i think i m being pretty crude with what i want to state.... but that should serve the purpose... bit busy right now, in case u req some other clarifications pl forward the same...

    ReplyDelete
  21. @nitheesh: really sorry mate...was busy dat day n cud reply to only 1 comment...

first thing u can go for ece in calicut.... i wud prefer it over eee in trichy...

prefer bits over calicut...but dual strict no-no.... unless it is an iit never advice any1 to go for dual... the std in other colls is just not dere to provide a good dual degree...for dual degree in iits go thru the other post in the blog....

so prefer ece over eee... first any top 4 colls wud do... but if it is eee in trichy... i wud suggest to google and know about the current status...trichy might ve much better scope than surathkal in eee....

u din speak about warrangal... it is a good nit too...top 3 i think....

why not comps... in case it is not in ur interest zone... don't bother but i hope u've given a serious thought to it....

Bottom Line: prefer ece over eee, but look out for eee in trichy...strict no-no to ANY dual degree in bits(u ve not reached a stage to decide ur masters yet...)... Give a thought to comps and warrangal... extra curicullar acts, i wud prefer surathkal over any of these...study wise trichy holds a distinct advantage over the rest top nits...
eee is not a bad branch just that i don't think it is gud enuf in surathkal... eee in iit is awesome...google for it in trichy....

    ReplyDelete
  22. thanx.....anyway i thought a lot and decided dat i will do mech.....and do a automobile or aeronautical specialization later....2 be frank...i prefer mech over comp...

PS :-any advice or stats on percentage of mech students given calls for international studies in kornell, rice, ncsu, kellogs etc...wud be deeply appreciated

    ReplyDelete
  23. mostly if you would prefer mech over comps, you r not wired for comps... i wud say a very wise and educated decision under circumstances...

specialization- don't go too much into details for now... try everything without any preconceived notions when you start your degree...

and yes there are ppl who have made it to top colls in US (No idea about Stat, anyway there is no tradition either remember this no IIT so the impetus lies more on you)... participate and explore as much as possible... out of the curricula boundary and maintain a freaking high pointer still....

for marks one tip- you won't have to slog very hard in mech... it is pretty easy going here... but never ever pick up even a disagreement with the prof/lecturer, let along fight...and attend more often than not all the classes... some times marks have direct proportionality with attendance, even though they ll declare it to be not mandatory...

marks, CGPA should not be an issue But ur extra curricular activities will... so develop contacts with mech seniors, take the advice from those who seem to have interest in research or higher studies.... only a few... so be selective before hinging on with one set of ideas....

  24. Hi! Gurlivleen .........

remember? i already sent u 2 emails b4. currently my aieee councelling is in progress. but tremendous amount of confusion is still there.......
i am getting mechanical & chemical in nit -surathkal, at same time electronics & commu. in nit-nagpur. if u compare two colleges surathkal is better choice but confusion comes in the selection of branch.which one i should go for? also i really dont know about placements in nit-nagpur electronics & communi. . i want to take elec.& comm. but mechanical is also ok for me. r there any chances of change in the branch in 2nd year? I won`t get admission in nit warangal & trichy for good branches. is mechanical in surathkal is really better than elect.& comm. in nagpur? i asked the same que to many experts but ans r not satisfactory. they all said both r good.
also i can get admission into iiser (indian institute for science education & research) -pune or iist-tiruanantpuram . is it better than nit? i dont have any idea about career in iiser.
what u think about computer or electr.commu. which is better?
    please send ur reply immediatly....................

    ReplyDelete
  25. Pl note both are good (read as i don't know)

u r asking a ques no person can answer unless one of the two mech or ece of the respective colls sucks bigtime due to some 'unearthly' reason.

i havn't heard of the colls u mentioned... i ve no idea... don't go by ratings either... they shuffle like nything every year... nits r safer, tried and tested choice... wud suggest not to clutter ur mind unnecessarily...

i get it u ve r in spot of bother but it is quite simple - placements- i don't thing any choice u make wud make a large difference...
u wud get better exposure in nit surathkal... u wud be away from home... in unknown terriotary... + the coll is good in activities outside the domain of studies.... in case u let urself to be part of it...

so all comes down to ur interest the branh of pref... if mech n ece both r k wid u go wid ece... but i wud be naive to advice u that... coz it is not as simple as that... now i don know how much u kno about tronics to be convinced that u want ece that bad...

its a freak show down here in ece at least for me.... i had no idea what ece was all about...but i took it coz ppl suggested to go 4 it...so if it is coming down to ppl's suggestion wid u too, go for mech nit surathkal or google and find out what is better and then decide....

whatever u do... don't regret it later... coz unless u ve some previous knowledge about these branches or some genuine interest ur guess wud as gud as the guess of rest of 95% freshers...

now it may sound like that even i said both are good :) but in quite detail... i think u r in a better position now...

    good luck

  26. hello,
i read this blog accidently and got to know so mANYuseful things but i am preety sure you can easily clear my doubts
1)since i have got not very good rank in aieee2009,but there are some chan ces of getting civil in nitk thru second councelling
but i want to change my branch by my capabilities in nitk SO PLS TELL ME WETHER STILL TERE IS BRANCH UPGRADING BY DOING WELL IN FIRST year(BY HAVING GPA AROUND 8.8 OR 9)

2)I SAW A SITE (ENTRANCECORNER.COM) WHICH WAS REALY HELPFUL IN MAKING GOOD DECISION....BUT I WANT TO MAKE SURE IS THE DATA FOR SECOND COUNCELLING RIGHT OR WRONG AS AS WHO BETTER KNOW IT THAN NIT GUYS
IF YOU FIND TIME I AM GIVING YOU THE METHOD
    1.WWW.ENTRANCECORNER.COM
2.RANK FOR A COLLEGE(CLICK ON IT) check it only for nit k in second coun
3.iknow i is difficult for you to know exact data but can you give aprox suggestion

    ReplyDelete
  27. Here is what i emailed to him...

civil at nitk is good... u can slide into some other branch... u ll have to work hard for that.. but u can't put a finger on which figure 8.8 or 9 or above 9 will help u upgrade... it is all relative so some year 9 may be ok to slide into chemical some year it may not...

to provide equal opportunities freshers are divided into 9 batches irresp of the allotted branches...so there is mix of all capabilities in every branch, so to speak. Now with 8.9 or 9 don't think u can aim very high.... coz there ll be ppl as always who will slog their way upto 9.6, 9.7 and they make the cut for highest branch change...

and there are other factors at work as well, whether there are enough vacant seats to actually make the sliding feasible... it happens mostly due to some ppl who go off to iit in their second attempts....

bottom line if u don't like the branch civil, don't put all ur eggs into the basket of sliding... i was thinking the same when i was considering 5 year courses in IITs, remem nearly everybody will be eyeing the elusive spots in "so-called" better branches...

but civil at nitk is a good branch...

secondly there is nothing like branch of my capabilities, all the branches require similar tenacity and talent if you want to excel in any of them... i learnt it the hard way after enrolling electronics and commn....

then about the website you mentioned i tried to find something useful, but those amateurs have posted so much clutter that it is like digging gold in tons of mud... nyway i have little idea about the closing ranks and second counselling because of god grace i didn't take that route while my admission...
They must have picked the data from official nitk website,.. i think u can find the closing ranks there as well... www.nitk.ac.in

  28. hi sir,
i am d one who got the 206 state rank.....1st allotment is done and i got civil....missed chem by 4 or 5 ranks....ppl r telling me that i will get mech....fyi - there are about 30 guys between my rank and d last alloted rank in mech....everyone says its because of ppl going to iits and bits just locking their choices for aieee....dat maybe true coz some guy who got a 200 something air has locked his choice along with another 6 guys in e&c nitk within 500 air....u think this may be true????thanx for your time

    ReplyDelete
  29. at least when i went through conunselling and admission procedure, not many ppl blocked seats.... frankly the under 200 guy u mentioned is a freak-show. i don't think there wud be enough freaks to make up for 30 ranks... but nevertheless there is chance for slinding into chemical, altough not a high probability...

    ReplyDelete
  30. thanx for your reply.....this years counselling has been a bag of surprises.....i was hopin to slide into chemical by a stroke of luck...but eventually i ended up with mechanical pretty comfortably....am i relieved....looking forward to nitk...there must be a lot of freaks blocking seats

ps:- r the megahostels ready...coz our abstract fee structure shows double bed rooms for 1st years instead of the triple or four i expected...although i dont believe it yet...

    ReplyDelete
  31. hello sir,
i managed to get metallurgy in the second round of counselling....but ive got a comp science seat in rvce....can u please share some more info regarding metallurgy branch

    ReplyDelete
  32. Well good for u...i can't fathom at all the reasons why anybody who is ranked under 2500 in JEE, would like to do by blocking Seats in NITs. Personally when i went for my JEE counselling following a rank tad below 3000, i had a clear cut idea about the branches of my preference and the respective institutes, my parents didn't interfere at all with those.. and it took me only moments to discover that by no stroke of luck i would get what i set foot for... so no deposit of money-drafts, no time-pass in counselling and i packed my bags and was off to home in a couple of hours.... so u can keep it simple if u want it that way...
about BITS Pilani, well it is worth a shot but if one is opting for Goa over the top NITs, i dare say he/she is making a mistake...not a big one but mistake nevertheless...

it is the indian mentality that just pushes people to garner as much safety as possible, even beyond rationale...

about the megahostels... first, there is only one megahostel and it is contemplated that it wud be still under construction when we reach there... it was previously allocated to us, final years... but now the news doing the rounds is that we will be moved into stinky final block (Previously kept for final years) for first two months...

bottomline: i think u r given only the best case scenario that without exception never materializes in NITK...welcome to abode of freakingineers...

    goodluck

  33. @ Ashish:

man u kiddin? RVCE comps for Meta NITK!!!
Meta is no match for comps dere even a laymen can tell u that... i even google about RVCE to reaffirm my belief...i did my high school from Karnataka, so RVCE did ring some bells in terms of one of the best coll in Karnataka overall and best among govt coll, PESIT with the honors for Private...

i presume here u don't ve some spl interest for meta... and not comp-allergic either...

bottomline: comps in RVCE would give u a much better deal in terms of opportunities than meta at NITK...Let me know if u ve some other constraints...goodluck

  34. and RVCE is a gov coll rite? m second guessin coz of what i read at one site...

  35. oh ok...thanks a lot for tht opinion sir....and rvce is a pvt autonomous college not a govt one...and wht if i get chem in the next round at nitk??

  36. Hello sir,

Your blog is amazing, refreshing and unique and the contents were quite useful in my context.
Since I am joining IT @NITK this year I just want to know some questions which are dwindling in my mind.

First one being, Is there some problem of drinking water there? Someone told me that.

Secondly, Is the food there provided in mess is so tasteless....n i being 4m North India would add to misery

Thirdly, I read u wrote that English is first then hindi n kannada is used 4 communication....is that inside campus or outside?? I just averages in English speaking skills....so would it be a problem to adjust there....

N would u recommend me a laptop there in first sem?

n what is the criteria 4 the selection of roommates?

    looking 4ward to ur guidance!!!
    thanks..

    ReplyDelete
  37. @ Ashish:

    Thanks for the info
Chem over RVCE, it depends on u ultimately, some views of mine and some facts which might help: i can assure u chem is one of the better branches here though not much hyped, it has a good track record in terms of students going for further studies in Foreign versities, good placements but do u like chem enough?

i mean if u like comps ece eee mech or IT more than u do chem plz prefer rvce.... it is a matter of choice... if u like chem enough it is a good choice but cosidering the lopsided levels of the branches on offer and the standard of rvce make a prudent choice....

BottomLine: NITK is no IIT so u shud not go any length to get a seat here...consider ur liking for the branch and remem RVCE is no slouch as a coll...

    ReplyDelete
  38. @ Anonymous:

i have included the two questions u asked by mail as well:

What is the avg. package IT this year? Again this yr ll have no relevance in 3 years from now, all this ll be history, must be some 3.2-3.7 lpa (The % ppl placed was down to 75-80% from otherwise 98-100), i have little idea... i have indicated the data of the good days in the branch specific post... all in all IT is v.good if not spectacular as far as placments are concerned. No worries here....

THE MEGA HOSTEL.......when would it start?
It was allotted to us final years but it seems there is a delay by 2 months or so (One floor is yet to be finished). So it should not make a big difference to your aspirations of 3 per room from otherwise 4 per room which was started a year back. The lady luck decides who you get to share room with, nothing much can be done here.

I won’t recommend a laptop in 1st semester, buying one in 3rd sem or at most in 2nd sem would be more prudent. First you would get a better hand about what you would require as configuration with some exposure here. Secondly you would negate making friends with those who are just with you for that elusive notebook. Thirdly you won’t need it in a big way, for the only computer oriented course in 1st year: C, you can go to central computer center and there are enough comps there. Fourth you don’t know your room-mates so avoid bringing one lap straightaway.

Yeah food does suck bigtime when you consider it on par with home food. But you can’t help it and is meaningless to bicker about. Frankly I have never given a damn about which mess is christened as what! All do taste similar apart from the one Mysore mess: which is typical south Indian, Avoid that if you can. Compromise and adapting to the situations are 2 sides of a coin in a student life.

Yeah you may have to walk around to get drinking water! It ain’t scary as it sounds. You can complain about the same to the hostels in charge and they will fix it sooner or later, depending on how sturdily u demand it. And yes there is water problem apart from the above as well. Again is this helping you in any manner, are you going to change the college coz of water and food troubles? So let us stay away from this meaningless exercise and pray for rain (It helps)

About language issues: again not a nuisance: there are enough and more people from both north and south India. So both Hindi and English are prominent in interaction among students. But English and sometimes some namesake faculty do use Kannada as well, not a big issue though; there words have little significance anyway. Outside College there are negligible language issues to speak about.

    ReplyDelete
  39. @ Anonymous:

Bottomline: Some of the issues are no-issues at all. You will have to make some compromises and adapt but that is the mantra of student life...

It is a fine college and you will be accomodated in one of the best hostels (in govt coll), esp after latest renovations in almost all...But water is more or less hinged on rain Gods and Food somehow is what it is, they just don't know how to cook good meals!!!

    welcome to NITK...

  43. Hi Amit,

You, as any fresher have a lot of needless clutter in your mind for now. Please for heavens sake calm down. You have made a astute choice and below are the response to your query.

I will answer all in terms of the priority or relevance I put together with your queries.
Is it possible to crack JEE while studying, well I saw 4 students do that in my first year in ECE, I personally believe it is all possible, provided you are committed to the goal and are willing to compromise little bit on CGPA in first year, some exuberance in terms of first year friendships and ragging (Yeah some like it so much that they can’t live without it). You can still earn an easy 8.0 though and make good friends. Just make sure to enroll yourself with FIITJEE Test series and commit to a schedule. Your AIR suggests you can definitely have a crack next year.
I can say you made a good choice. Ceramics at ITBHU is not worth it.

Coming to less relevant things especially at this stage, don’t worry about placements, especially in Computers, they are at par with the best of NITs and of course are somewhat down as compared to IITs. For more you can read some of the other posts in this blog and yes the percentage people placed this time around in Comps was down to 85-90% in first round, which otherwise used to comfortable beat 100% not long time ago. Yeah all the brands do visit the campus.

I remember how I used to worry needlessly about placements and how I used to give my seniors a hard time with the entire nuisance. Believe me I am talking from great experience here and all these queries will matter next to nothing in next 3 years for you. Just get down here and take care of your first year and your JEE aspirations, too much clutter leaves only little result. IAS/IIM is way ahead of time and as is with all the ok sort of campuses in India there are preparation opportunities here as well. Just come down with an open mindset and don’t over think about the future, because it doesn’t help one bit.

With syllabus you are definitely kidding me… There is C programming, now if you can muster that in 5 days please do and there is another bunch of 11th and 12th standard courses in little more detail (This is arguable though :-)) Going by the sort of doubts you have I would recommend you to go through all the other post relating to engineering and their respective comments, they will help your mind to ease up a bit. If you do decide to do those excruciating bits of exercise and go through each and every one of those, contact me on 09876783096 after 6:30 in the evening in next couple of days.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hey Anonymous:
Not unlike your name, your doubt is also very common and to an extent not answerable especially with the detail that is provided. It all depends on your inclination with either branches and your compatibility with the location of colleges. One is far north and another far South. So there are a lot of variables. Both are level placed colleges. Mech. As I here at DCE is quite good, they have won quite a few automobile contests. So Google is the way to go, if you want to learn about your interests and for more on the same please render some more data and constraints that you might have.

  45. Sir,

Thanks a lot for taking out some time from your schedule to guide me. As I have earlier posted as anonymous (since network is poor here...n it was the most reliable option) therefore u can trace me back by comment time- Tuesday, July 14, 2009 4:34:00 PM

My name is Rahul Singh Thakur and I am from Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh. Actually my ma n papa were worried about those issues...ur replies helped me a lot...But in anycase my decision of coming to Surathkal will not change...

I asked those questions because I just wanted to be prepared for life there... moreover I wanted to lower down my expectations (without someone's else true words, it was not possible)...and to reply to my ma n papa quires...

After talking to you I have gained more confidence that I made a nice decision to join NITK...because with people like you around, I have a lot to learn and improve myself...
Thanks once again and you are doing a great job ...n yeah i have started praying 4 rains too...

    ReplyDelete
  46. To any fresher one advice for 'ma & pa' issue is to not give them whole picture, the whole 'not-great' wholistic yet real view...Keeping them aloof in this regard is not such a bad idea as it sounds.... one should give only glossy, good overview about coll...there is little pt in making them worry about ur well-being is dere? At the same time never procastinate 'ma & pa' issues and sort-out as and when they arise otherwise they wud unnecessarily worry about them...

  51. @ Anonymous1: i think u ll find hostel facilities bit like more than ok....u ll ve to share it wid 3 other guys...no need to press panic button though....one (now) second yr told me it is still not so clumsy...
Nothing much to carry... u can buy most of the stuff here...

@ suhas: think we ve talked about placements a lot... plz refer to some previous comments and edition in this post...

ragging: it all depends on ur preference, yeah it all depends on u...so pretty chill... intro is the worst plausible....since u r from b'lore not much ragging for sure....
for others: there r some advantages of giving ragging by joining the party funda... dere r some clubs, where u ve got to be in the party (depending on ur domicile, state parties like punjab, gult, matha, NE and many others) to make into those...u ll get more insights when u ll get down here...All in all pretty chill, ragging not a big concern...

@ Anonymous2; AIR 7K: enuf of flattery...nyway thanks if the comment is heartfelt...I ve no stats to back if u wud be able to slide into mech/civil... i wud ve preferred chem over civil but it all depends on ur preference... just Google and go through the other posts to get a better perspective...
I’ve edited this post wid the latest data... u can give a look... placements anyway now wud ve no relevance in 3 years for u...

@ Ajay: Well bit busy right now... but drop in if u ve some concern to address or email: aviator003@gmail.com Gurlivleen aka Happy, ECE, Final year....

  62. hey..
im studying in NIT trichy ECE, first year..
i find your blog quite helpful...ive always wanted to study at NITK...is there anyway i can go there without dropping a year?

    ReplyDelete
  63. hii...plz tell me which is best for comp sci among these?
    1)IIIT Hyderabad...
    2)NIT trichy
    3)NIT Surathkal
    4)NSIT delhi...
    reply plz..
give some info about packages, faculty, atmosphere, infrastructure etc...

    ReplyDelete
  64. Amey, firstly the top 3 colleges (NSIT delhi i don't think is in the same league) u mentioned should be only next to 7 core IITs wrt to comp sci.
and if you turn out to be a decent student at any of the 3 colleges, i can say u ll find similar packages in all these colleges at the end of 3 years, since similar companies come to campus for each. So key is to be a good student in any of these top 3.
Don't even bother about faculty as far as placements are concerned, they are driven by brand of college and passed out students. as far as higher studies is concerned i believe IIIT to be better than Trichy which is in turn better than surathkal.
Atmo wise pl look into IIIT's - no idea. Surathkal's is better than trichy. I presume IIIT won't be as weird as trichy (as i am told).
    Infra - all same.
I presume u r from delhi (with nsit in ur list) n if so wud advice to take admission in these far off colleges (top 3). the exp is worth it and u wud never ever get the same by staying closer to ur home.

Bottomline: Don't think IIIT envo could be as bad to merit not taking a seat there. i've heard it is really good coll (esp since they are comp, it focused). Considering all, i wud suggest surathkal over trichy. forget nsit if u have a shot elsewhere.

  65. hi, Hope it helps, try to find some x students from IIIT, get their views if u can. but decide ur gut..
In the end, if u turn out to be top 20% student in any of these top colleges,, the initial choice wud hardly matter. finally u wud gravitate to what u deserve, no matter what. Goodluck.

  66. how is the mech department currently at nitk?have there been changes since your time or still the same stuck up bunch?and i wanted to know how many ppl get into ivy league colleges every yr at NITK and do ppl go for MS after Mech in NITK?

  67. hey luks lyk i'l get civil or IT in nitk wich do u think is a better bet???
...u seem to b quite a source:)pls suggest pls pls

  68. hi , i m studying in nitk , i ll be in third sem this july ie enter my branch thats EC .is ec really hard in nitk. some advice will be of great help :)

    ReplyDelete
  69. @sanjeed: Don't know about present mech and seriously i don't think there is a lot of difference in any of the Non-IIT colls in terms of quality of edu or infra. It is just left to the student to take up responsibility, to not go blindly after pointers and to do meaningful projects, internships and probably write some papers. This is the only way i see a guy getting into an ivy league coll on a scholarship. Professor's reco (most are not hotshots) is not enough and ur CV apart from academics should be really strong. Since it is tough, many take the conventional job and then some MS or a paid entry into a decent coll abroad. Bottom-line: a non IIT (top 7) coll puts u at a disadvantage wrt to studies abroad, it is up to you to correct that disadv.

  70. @ surabhi: If u r really into construction, building, material stuff civil is the way to go. if you are interested in Comps or internet or not sure about anything IT would be better - since it leaves u with more scope. Placements wise no brainer - IT it is.
Pl go through this post for some ideas-

  71. @ Anonymous: do think it is harder than other branches (opinion ofc) but it might be as rewarding as well if you really like it (it is upto you to figure out). Simply put if u r doing engineering just coz it is the norm and EC is one of the top branches ppl opt for, then u really got to figure out what u want and most likely do it in 2nd year. Accordingly u should think of doing core projects, interns or devoting time to looking for where u belong. Simply put if u have a bearish outlook for engineering as a career and a mba seems like a potential choice u shud just look to score decent pointers (imp for cat) and do okish on real learning.

Serious advice: Keep a minimum 6.5 CGPA, becomes diff in a highly competitive branch like ECE. like wud become really difficult otherwise.

even though u r already into EC, This post should help in getting what i am saying:

Do u think its possible to crack cat in ones final year itself or is some work experiance better?
sir, i must admit ur bogs r really helpfull i got some insights into wat awaits me for the next three years in EC.

  73. hey,
i will get mining at nit surathkal and on the other hand chemical at DTU(dce).....
Now, out of these two, what should i choose.??
I wanted to study ece or eee but ruined my aieee exam. as there is an option of branch change after 1st year at nitk but not at dtu, so which way should i go...??
I know one have to be enough pointer in first year for post sliding . i believe i can score well( my % always lied between 90-95% in school)

    help me........what should i choose??????

  74. @anonymous: u can start preparing for CAT, second year onwards.. no need to join some coaching at that point but you could solve some puzzles for quant and DI. Google esp look in pagalguy.com. do join.
it requires consistent effort to succeed in verbal, wud suggest preparing at leisure but with intent.

@abhijeet: sliding is a very tough nut, u wud compete with ppl from all branches (non comps, ece) and it depends on avbl of seats in the higher branches (ppl join IITs in 2nd year, vacating some seats, so the numb is very limited and could be even 0). I wud not recommend joining mining, u wud limit ur scope a great deal and it wud be understatement to say that competing for sliding is very tough (all guys looking for the same score 95 historically). Plus if ur motivation levels go down or u screw up one course out of 12-15 in a year, u cud be struck with mining. I presume u don't aspire to be mining engineer.
rather dce is a good coll and chem wud leave some scope for higher studies and may provide better placement opportunities.
    bottomline: prefer DCE chem.

    goodluck guys.

  85. Hi gurlivleen!

I got an AIR of 1414 in the AIEEE and mostly can get any NIT. I'm not being able to decide between Warangal , Trichy and Surathkal. I wanna finally enter the aerospace and aviation industry. Many people have told me mech is the best choice, but electronics , electrical and communication have immense use and applications in aerospace. How do I know whether EEE or ECE or Mechanical is good for me? Also someone told me that Trichy has a horrible hostel and food than the other 2 and ragging is still prevalent. They also said that studying is not possible due to innumerable power cuts and water shortage and bad hygiene of the place. I am academically and extra curricular wise highly inclined, and am a simple guy sensitive about hygiene. Could you please direct me as to what I should do and what should be my choice?

Do you mind telling where you got placed & with what package and what happened to your higher studies?
